Arguably the biggest shopping event of the year kicks off on Friday and FNB customers are expected to spend big this year according to the bank.

In 2018 FNB credit and debit card holders spent a collective R2.5 billion during Black Friday. The bank expects to see an increase on that already exorbitant amount.

“We expect the value of Black Friday transactions to rise by 16% this year. When comparing typical Friday spend to Black Friday, we usually see a 100% increase in spend by customers,” FNB Retail chief executive, Raj Makanjee said in a statement.

While that 16 percent increase seems a bit small, we suspect this is due to a number of retailers hosting sales for the entirety of this week. This could lower numbers on the actual Friday.

Whether you are shopping throughout the week or just on Black Friday, FNB advises customers budget properly.

“We encourage consumers to be mindful that Black Friday is effectively the start of a very long festive season, therefore it’s important to plan for it properly and budget for purchases. Those participating should also consider making purchases for Back to School necessities to ease possible financial pressure at the beginning of next year,” says Makanjee.
