Twitter will start removing inactive accounts next month

Twitter users who aren’t logging into their accounts regularly have been issued a warning by the social network – log in before 11th December or lose your account.

Users who have not used their account for six months are at risk of their account being deleted and their user name re-entering the pool as a result.

Interestingly, it’s not the inactivity that Twitter is concerned with but rather the fact that these accounts haven’t agreed to the currents Ts and Cs.

Inactive users are receiving the following email from Twitter, according to The Verge.

“Hello, to continue using Twitter, you’ll need to agree to the current Terms, Privacy Policy, and Cookie Use. This not only lets you make the best decisions about the information that you share with us, it also allows you to keep using your Twitter account. But first, you need to log in and follow the on-screen prompts before Dec. 11, 2019, otherwise your account will be removed from Twitter.”

It’s important to note that inactivity is determined by logging into Twitter and not necessarily tweeting, at least according to Twitter’s inactive account policy.

“As part of our commitment to serve the public conversation, we’re working to clean up inactive accounts to present more accurate, credible information people can trust across Twitter. Part of this effort is encouraging people to actively log-in and use Twitter when they register an account, as stated in our inactive accounts policy,” a spokesperson for Twitter told The Verge.

The upside of this is that a whole bunch of handles will become available as inactive accounts are culled. When exactly that will happen is unclear as this process will take place over a couple of months rather than one day.

Personally I’m hoping my name gets freed up but I do wonder how Twitter will deal with tweets to inactive accounts and tweets to those accounts in the future.
