Intel teams up with MediaTek to bring 5G to notebooks

The move to 5G is happening – albeit at a glacial pace – but there hasn’t been much talk about the connectivity standard hitting desktops and notebooks.

That is until Intel announced it has partnered with MediaTek to develop, certify and support 5G modems for future devices.

“5G is poised to unleash a new level of computing and connectivity that will transform the way we interact with the world. This partnership with MediaTek brings together industry leaders with deep engineering, system integration and connectivity expertise to deliver 5G experiences on the next generation of the world’s best PCs,” says Intel executive vice president and general manager of its Client Computing Group, Gregory Bryant.

For its part, Intel will define the 5G solution for deployment in notebooks and MediaTek will develop and manufacture the 5G modem.

Interestingly, Intel said that Fibocom will work with the partners to develop M.2 modules with a view to integrating the solution with Intel platforms.

“Our 5G modem for PCs, developed in partnership with Intel, is integral to making 5G accessible and available across home and mobile platforms,” MediaTek president, Joe Chen said in a statement.

“5G will usher in the next era of PC experiences, and working with Intel, an industry leader in computing, highlights MediaTek’s expertise in designing 5G technology for global markets. With this partnership, consumers will be able to browse, stream and game faster on their PCs, but we also expect them to innovate with 5G in ways we have not yet imagined,” Chen added.

The partners are looking to deliver the solution by 2021 with Dell and HP earmarked as the first manufacturers to implement Intel and MediaTek’s 5G solution into notebooks.

Despite ditching its 5G efforts earlier this year, it appears Intel is getting back on that horse. Whether MediaTek will be the missing piece of a winning formula remains to be seen.
