The Legend of Bum-Bo launches with cardboard trailer & positive reviews

The prequel / spin off to The Binding of Isaac, The Legend of Bum-Bo, is finally out and is being met with a generally positive reception.

On Steam, the only place to buy the game at the moment, the game is currently sitting with a “Mostly Positive” review status from just under 400 reviews.

If you’ve not seen the game before now, The Legend of Bum-Bo is a very unique mix of match four puzzle game, roguelike and deck builder. It also features lane-based combat and a rather amazing art style.

Everything in this game is made to look like a real, crafted world made mostly of cardboard. The launch trailer (embedded below) leans heavily on this, but the unique aesthetic extends into the actual game too. Think Yoshi’s Woolly World or Paper Mario, only much dirtier and featuring puzzles tiles based on urine and excrement.

To accompany the launch The Binding of Isaac creator Edmund McMillen released an update on Steam stating that this has been “one of my most successful launches of all time when it comes to sales!”

This isn’t just self congratulatory, however, as McMillen also reiterated that the game will be updated as time goes on and post patch details will accompany these updates. He also encourages players to tweet problems directly to him @edmundmcmillen.

Those wanting to play the game now can buy it for 10% off during its launch week, which ends on 19th November.

As long time fans of Isaac and the type of roguelikes it inspired, we’ll definitely be giving this one a go. Those who aren’t exactly puzzle types will be happy to know that, while you will be matching tiles to complete much of the game, there’s a much larger metagame around this system based on combos and synergies, like any good roguelike.
