Looking out for your loved ones can be made easier with technology and a newly released app does just that.
MiBlackBox releases today for Android and iOS and it contains a number of safety features including a 48 hour location history.
The app allows friends and family to see where you were for 48 hours, the level of your mobile phone’s battery and even what speed you may have been driving at. As a user you are able to send audio messages, capture pictures and video and send your location to other users.
“In a country where more than two million crimes were recorded in 2019, it’s also become increasingly important that those in an emergency are able to contact someone they trust. MiBlackBox offers reassurance that victims are not alone if they’re caught in a dangerous situation,” managing director at MiBlackBox, Brent Thomson, said in a statement.
MiBlackBox also features a panic button. When pressed, a discreet call to MiBlackBox will be made and a voice recording is made on the app’s servers. This recording is then sent out emergency contacts.
This is a bit weak if we’re honest as services such as Namola actually allow you to contact and request emergency services rather than notifying your emergency contacts with a recorded message. Given that every second matters in an emergency it’s curious that MiBlackBox hasn’t opted for a similar solution.
MiBlackBox is also not a free app. Users will be required to purchase a subscription at R14.99 per month or R149.99 per year. A family package for six members will cost R49.99 per month and R499.99 per year. The app is available for Android and Apple iOS.
Earlier this year we looked at a few safety and SOS apps including free and premium apps. While MiBlackBox does fall into that category we feel that solutions such as Namola and mySOS which are both free (and have paid options with stand-alone panic buttons) are better options.
Of course it comes down to personal preference but we recommend testing out some free safety apps before parting ways with your money for premium features.
