Qualcomm debuts 5G-supporting Snapdragon 865 chipset

What processors will next year’s flagship Android phones be sporting? Likely something from Qualcomm, and if they can get their hands on it quickly enough, the new Snapdragon 865 chipset that the firm recently debuted.

The mobile silicon specialist unpacked its key mobile chipsets for 2020, with the 865 leading the way. There are also two additional new processors in the Snapdragon 765 and 765G, with the latter focused more on gaming than the other.

As for the Snapdragon 865 its big feature is the fact that it can support 5G connectivity, although this is not done natively and still requires the use of a 5G modem to pull off the task. Added to the improved connectivity capabilities, Qualcomm says its new flagship silicon can deliver enhanced AI processing, as well as recording content in fully fledged 8K.

Whether there will be a smartphone with a good enough screen to showcase that content, is something that manufacturers will have to worry about.

Speaking of which a few firms have already outlined desires to utilise the new chipset, with Chinese firms Xiaomi and Oppo both said to using the 865 in new handsets during the first quarter of next year.

Whether the likes of Sony will join during that quarter for MWC 2020 is unclear, but HMD Global (which makes Nokia phones) has signalled its intent to use the aforementioned 765 silicon. Lenovo (which owns Motorola) too is planning to use both the 865 and 765 processors.

It’s still to be seen when Qualcomm will be capable of delivering 5G connectivity via an integrated modem, but for now the Snapdragon 865 will be the chipset of choice for any Android phone makers that do not manufacture silicon of their own.
