Spotify staff shut down idea to have the service on Nintendo Switch

For those still hoping for media services and apps to arrive on the Nintendo Switch, it looks like Spotify is out of the running in that regard potentially.

This comes from a staff status update on the Spotify Community site. On the site users can post ideas for the platform to do things like add functionality, improve UI or, in this case, bring the service to a new platform.

Other users can then vote on the idea more votes increasing the likelihood that Spotify will look at the idea and make moves to implement it.

In April 2017 user Erboda posted the idea for Spotify on the Nintendo Switch. At the time of writing the idea garnered 11 000 votes, but has now been closed with the following comment:

“Hey folks, Spotify staff here. We’re always working on improving the Spotify experience across platforms, but we don’t have any further information to share at the moment. It should also be noted that we typically don’t announce integrations with third parties in advance. Thanks for continuing to share your ideas.”

That staff comment was made just recently on 4th December. Due to the vague wording of the comment it may point to “no Spotify on the Switch any time soon” instead of “no Spotify on the Switch ever”.

It may also be that the staff are simply cleaning up their site, closing active, popular ideas which are getting on in years.

Regardless, it appears that the music streaming service is not going to be on Nintendo’s console any time soon, joining other prominent ones like Netflix and Twitch simply not being available right now.

While some may argue that adding these to the console would be superfluous when most have them available on their phones, there’s really no downside for consumers to have more options. We understand that there may be some red tape or unjustifiable costs involved for the companies, which is likely why the Switch remains so devoid of streaming options.
