Earlier this week we wrote about a lawsuit that was brought against the parent company of TikTok, in which the social media platform was deemed to be in violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

This as the company collected the data of children under the age of 13 without explicit consent from their parents, and then sold said data to third-party advertisers.

As expected the Chinese firm that owns TikTok, ByteDance, sought to resolve the matter fairly quickly given it had no real defence for its action and this morning reached a settlement for said lawsuit.

Unfortunately the details of the settlement have not been disclosed, nor has TikTok made any intention of divulging such information at the time of writing.

“TikTok is firmly committed to safeguarding the data of its users, especially our younger users,” an unnamed spokesperson told The Verge.

“Although we disagree with much of what is alleged in the complaint, we have been working with the parties involved and are pleased to have come to a resolution of the issues,” they added.

The above quote is quite interesting in the greater scheme of things, as it potentially points to TikTok believing that it did nothing wrong. As such it remains unclear if the firm will change its policies regarding the collection and handling of children’s data.

With the wildly popular video sharing app operating in other countries, and its practices piquing the interest of regulators in those regions too, it’s still unknown if the social media platform is in for more lawsuits in coming months.

Either way this probably isn’t the last time we write about data collection when it comes to TikTok.
