ISPA promises better protection against DDoS attacks in 2020

Internet service providers in South Africa have been plagued by rampant distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks in the latter half of the year.

For customers this meant an inability to access the internet as their service providers scrambled to protect their systems.

The good news is that, in the new year, these attacks should be mitigated.

We say this following an alert Hypertext received from the Internet Service Providers Association this morning.

The association says that administrators at South Africa’s Internet Exchanges are taking firm and coordinated action against attackers by creating a blackhole to funnel DDoS traffic down.

“The South African Internet will be better protected against DDoS attacks during the course of 2020 as local ISPs peering at JINX, CINX and DINX begin directing malicious traffic down a defensive blackhole,” explains co-chair of ISPA, Guy Halse.

While this should help mitigate DDoS attacks, ISPA has also advised South African internet denizens to be mindful of what they download.

This is because malware can be used to corral your smartphone or PC into a botnet which in turn can be used to execute DDoS attacks.

“Being careful to always source apps from legitimate app stores while making sure to read the comments, permissions and terms & conditions of individual apps will help ensure users do not inadvertently download the malware that powers DDoS attacks,” Halse advises.

“DDoS attacks are a clear threat to the entire South African Internet ecosystem and ISPA and its partners will continue to tackle this particular challenge with renewed vigour in 2020,” the ISPA co-chair concludes.

Here’s hoping South Africa’s internet runs a bit smoother in 2020.
