Huawei to debut an upgraded version of the foldable Mate X next year

2019 was a mixed year for foldable phones, with only the Samsung Galaxy Fold eventually reaching South African shores after several delays. We’re still to see a market-ready version of the Huawei Mate X land locally, but it already looks like the Chinese firm will have an updated version ready to go in the year.

This confirmation comes via Frandroid (French), which recently visited the firm’s headquarters and spoke to consumer business head Richard Yu. The exec explained that Huawei would have an updated version that it planned to launch in European markets in the first quarter of next year, but no word on other key regions like SA at this stage.

Giving the timeline that Yu has noted, we’ll likely see said updated Mate X at MWC 2020 in Barcelona during late-February, which means a fully fledged second iteration of the foldable phone is a slim possibility. Those hoping for a Mate X 2 for example probably won’t be getting a device then.

As for the updated Mate X, it is said to sport a faster processor, which will likely be the 5G flavour of Kirin 990 which Huawei debuted at IFA this year. There’s also a stronger hinge and tougher display material being added, which were two areas that Samsung had to address with its Galaxy Fold earlier this year.

While a better manufactured Mate X is in no way a bad idea, especially as the first version only launched in China last month, there is still the looming question of the operating system onboard the device, with Google still not supporting Play services and official apps on new Huawei devices.

Either way the first half of 2020 will prove crucial for the firm, with the P40 series also expected to debut early in the year.
