Lenovo reveals full details on its folding notebook – the ThinkPad X1 Fold

Lenovo has laid out its intention of exploring foldable displays for the past year now. More recently we got to see the new Motorola razr come to fruition, as well as the firm’s first foldable notebook at Tech World 2019 late last year.

At the time no name was given to the device but that changed for CES 2020, with the foldable notebook now being called the ThinkPad X1 Fold and further details arriving from the Chinese manufacturer.

The device features an OLED-made 13.3″ display when laid flat, and can fold into a more traditional notebook position for work, as well as close with a slight gap at the central hinge. The X1 Fold also weighs less than 1kg, and can work in conjunction with a Bluetooth keyboard and stylus pen.

At this stage there is no mention of the RAM, storage, battery and graphics components on the X1 Fold, but Lenovo has confirmed that Intel will handle the CPU elements, with USB Type-C ports favoured.

Lenovo also has a 5G-supporting flavour available, as well as Windows 10 being the native operating system. The firm has plans to launch a Windows 10X version later in the year too, with that OS better catered to devices with interesting form factors such as folding screens.

In terms of availability, Lenovo plans to launch the ThinkPad X1 Fold in mid-2020 for selected regions such as the United States, but South Africa’s status is still unknown. Unexpectedly the ThinkPad X 1 Fold does not come cheap, starting at a recommended $2 499 (~R35 450).

Once local details have been shared, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.
