Matric class of 2019 scores an 81.3 percent pass rate

The wait for hundreds of thousands of local Matrics is over as the Department of Basic Education has published the Matric results for the class of 2019.

As many as 787 717 candidates sat for the final National Senior Certificate exams in November 2019 and the pass rate for those exams sits at 81.3 percent. This represents an increase of 3.1 percentage points from 2018’s pass rate.

Looking at each province individually, the Free State had the highest pass percentage with 88.4 percent. This biggest improvement year-on-year however came from KwaZulu-Natal which rose from a 76.2 percent pass rate in 2018 to 81.3 percent in 2019.

Limpopo is still the worst performing province with a pass rate of 73.2 percent.

The only province that saw a drop in the pass rate is Gauteng which dropped from 87.9 percent in 2018 to 87.2 percent in 2019.

In fact, none of the 75 districts in South Africa scored lower than 60 percent.

“Districts are a crucial interface of the basic education sector in identifying best practice, sharing information and providing support to schools. The continued growth in the performance of districts is closely monitored and evaluated by both provincial and national departments,” said Basic Education minister, Angie Motshekga.

In terms of Bachelor and Diploma passes, those improved by 3.3 percent points and 1.1 percent points respectively.

“A majority of our learners – 65% – passed with a bachelors or a diploma. It is very important to note that 337 730 candidates, achieved these and are eligible to study at institution of higher learning,” added Motshekga.

These are some really great results from the class of 2019 and we hope this momentum can be carried through 2020.
