Stage 2 loadshedding to plague South Africans until Friday morning

Despite its best efforts to keep things under control it appears as if Eskom has lost far too much generation capacity and will now need to implement day-time loadshedding.

This week saw Eskom loadshedding overnight as a way to minimise the disruptions caused by the power cuts.

A power alert on Thursday morning however, has revealed that Eskom will need to implement Stage 2 loadshedding all day on Thursday and through until 06:00 on Friday morning.

“We have lost additional generation capacity overnight with breakdowns of over 14 000MW. Our emergency reserves are also insufficient to meet the demand for electricity during the day,” Eskom wrote in a power alert.

Stage 2 kicked off at 08:00 and it’s highly recommended that you check your schedule in order to plan your day.

Despite assurances from President Cyril Ramaphosa that there would be no loadshedding until 13th January, it appears as if Eskom could not hold up its end of the bargain. The president even declared that all leave for Eskom executives would be cancelled but it seems that had little to no effect on the reliability of the grid.

We shudder to think about what will happen when schools, universities and other businesses return next week.
