Apple issues replacement program for some models of its iPhone smart battery case

Is the smart battery case on your iPhone giving you trouble? Well you’re not alone and Apple may be able to replace it depending on which model of device it is for.

The Cupertino-based firm has announced a replacement program for selected models of the iPhone smart battery case, which applies specifically for the one issued for the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR.

Apple is willing to replace affected cases should they be exhibiting the following issues:

  • Battery case will not charge or charges intermittently when plugged into power
  • Battery case does not charge the iPhone or charges it intermittently.

“Affected units were manufactured between January 2019 and October 2019. This is not a safety issue and Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will replace eligible battery cases, free of charge,” writes the firm on the official page for the replacement program.

The company does however note a few other elements, such as replacements only applying to those cases for the aforementioned models. As such if your iPhone is not listed above, it will not be eligible.

It should also be noted that this replacement offer only applies for two years after the smart battery case was first purchased. Furthermore this replacement offer does not extend the warranty (iCare) on the accessory should you have taken such an option.

This is a worldwide program and should be available to South African Apple customers, but it is always a good idea to get a hold of your local iStore or authorised reseller to find out if they will assist with the replacement.

We have reached out to iStore South Africa’s technical support team who have confirmed that this recent smart battery case replacement will be supported locally.
