Huawei reportedly selling 100 000 foldable phones a month, so where are South Africa’s?

After Samsung had to provide a more accurate figure of its Galaxy Fold sales to date, Huawei decided to reveal its own foldable sales numbers for the Mate X earlier this week. According to Android Central that number is around 100 000 units per month ever since the device went on sale exclusively in China in November last year.

With it only being available to purchase for a couple of months, that is an impressive figure if it is indeed true, but it does beg one question – when will the device launch in South Africa?

Back in August last year we asked Huawei Mobile South Africa about the status of the device following the firm’s annual developer conference, and at the time the company was hoping to have the phone arrive in SA before the year’s end.

Since then the firm has not been able to launch the Mate 30 Pro due to a lack of Google services support, and we heard no new information regarding the Mate X.

Given that Huawei is reportedly working on an upgraded version of the Mate X with better internal specifications and stronger materials, perhaps the first iteration will never land in SA and the new version is destined for local shores.

Either way with Samsung having launched the Galaxy Fold locally despite its own delays, when it comes to the foldable phone stakes, South Korean firm has a slight edge on its Chinese rivals.

Most importantly for Huawei though is sorting out its Google services status moving forward, especially if it plans to launch the latest iteration of its P series smartphones later this year. If that happens, a foldable phone arriving from Huawei becomes far more likely.

For now things look up in the air when it comes to the Mate X.
