Ericsson and Microsoft working together on next generation of connected cars

As we enter the week following CES 2020 in Las Vegas, a number of new electric concept cars were unveiled, and while that points to an intriguing future as to the design and what will be powering our cars in a few years from now, what about connectivity and software that will enable the technology on offer?

This is what a recently announced partnership between Ericsson and Microsoft on connected cars aims to address.

More specifically the partnership sees Ericsson build a Connected Vehicle Cloud solution on top of Microsoft’s Connected Vehicle Platform, which is powered by the firm’s Azure product.

The effects of this solution will be far-reaching too, with the Ericsson Connected Vehicle Cloud connecting more than 4 million vehicles across 180 countries worldwide, which is said to account for approximately 10 percent of the connected vehicle market, the company notes.

“The platform is tailored to fit vehicle manufacturers’ growing demand for scalability and flexibility with the capability of supporting any connected vehicle service,” Ericsson outlined in a press release.

“Ericsson’s Connected Vehicle Cloud offloads vehicle manufacturers’ complexity of global 24/7 operations and life cycle management related to connected vehicles with a guaranteed service-level agreement,” it adds.

As for the Microsoft portion of this equation it is said to assist automotive companies to accelerate the delivery of safe, comfortable and personalised connected driving experiences, by combining cloud infrastructure, edge technology as well as AI and IoT services with a diverse partner ecosystem, the firm points out.

“The Ericsson and Microsoft partnership will deliver a comprehensive connected vehicle platform at scale to the market. Our integrated solutions will help automotive manufacturers accelerate their global connected vehicle solutions and offer a better experience for drivers and passengers,” says Åsa Tamsons, SVP and head of business area technologies & new businesses at Ericsson.

“This is an exciting new offering with great benefits for the automotive industry, leveraging Ericsson and Microsoft’s technology leadership in connectivity and cloud,” she concludes.

With connected cars all the rage five years ago, hopefully initiatives like this reinvigorate developments in this field moving forward.
