Several leaks land online for Huawei P40 Pro, but will it support Google apps?

We have already seen leaked images of Samsung’s Galaxy S20+ and now it’s the turn of the Huawei P40 Pro, as leaker du jour Evan Blass is at it again with renders of the Chinese firm’s new flagship phone.

In the images we see that Huawei has gone all out for the rear camera housing, which features five lenses from what we can tell. The housing is rectangular in shape and appears to jut out a bit. The precise megapixels for said lenses is unknown at this stage, but they are Leica-made, with a pair of front facing lenses added to the mix.

The body of the device is rather interesting too, with Blass noting that it will make use of a ceramic design. Whether that is only for the black and white versions featured in the header image above is unclear, but it would be a significant departure from the gradient colour schemes that won Huawei so many fans in recent years.

Other elements of the device include a notch-less screen with the front facing camera placed in an oblong cut-out in the top left-hand side of the display.Added to this is the usual mix of power button, volume rocker, USB Type-C port and no headphone jack, which is the same setup found on the P30 Pro.

No mention of where the fingerprint sensor is placed, but we’re assuming it will be embedded underneath the screen.

Perhaps the most important element of the device is still a mystery at this stage, and that is what the kinds of apps the operating system will support. Huawei famously chose not to launch the Mate 30 Pro last year outside of China as the phone did not support any Google services.

If the same applies to the P40 Pro, Huawei may be forced to limit the scope of the phone’s launch too. Given that the P series has helped Huawei start previous years’ off strongly, this will likely prove the company’s most pivotal hardware launch to date.

As for when that will happen remains to be seen, with no word on a global event just yet. Going on past years we’re expecting an event to be confirmed for March in Paris, as has been the company’s recent modus operandi.
