Liquid Telecom to launch 5G wholesale roaming service in SA later this year

5G was suppose to be one of the burgeoning technologies that dominated 2019, but it turns out many of us got our timing wrong.

To that end it appears as if 2020 is the year the mobile broadband standard comes to prominence, and Liquid Telecom is aiming to be one of the key service providers in that regard following a recent announcement.

The firm plans to launch a 5G wholesale roaming service in early 2020. The precise date for said launch has not been disclosed, but given the time frame, it should happen within the next few months.

“Available from early 2020 in all major South African cities, this latest fifth generation of mobile internet connectivity will enable wholesale operators to create innovative, ultra-fast and scalable digital services for their customers,” Liquid Telecom noted in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“This breakthrough 5G wholesale service will create of innovation in every aspect of South African society and industry. For the first time, mobile network operators and ISPs will have open access to Liquid Telecom’s new 5G mobile network. The launch of the service also underscores Liquid Telecom’s vision to bring high-speed connectivity to everyone,” enthused Strive Masiyiwa, chairman at Liquid Telecom.

As for the type of connectivity that will be provided, Liquid Telecom confirms that the 5G network will be built upon the firm’s 3.5Ghz spectrum asset.

The company adds that this new network will be a boon for a myriad industries in South Africa as it will help deliver on the promise of 4IR, IoT, AI and robotics, among other things, according to Liquid Telecom.

“Our wholesale operating partners can exploit our new ultra-fast 5G roaming network to build the next generation of communications and make innovation possible, anytime, anywhere. 5G will facilitate real-time remote collaboration, improved business efficiency and lower costs – ultimately driving growth in the South African economy,” added Nic Rudnick, Group CEO.

Whether it can deliver on what is being promised remains to be seen, as is the extent of the coverage for the different South African major cities.

Either way it is pleasing to see local firms pushing forward with deploying 5G locally, while we still wait on government to make the necessary spectrum available.
