Acer’s new Chromebook for the classroom lands in April for under R5K

There’s a new Acer Chromebook headed for local shores in April and it’s sporting a number of features that make it especially good in the classroom.

The Chromebook 712 is a 12inch Chromebook rocking a 10th Gen Intel Core i3 processor and 4GB or 8GB of RAM depending on the model.

The 12inch display has a rather uncommon 3:2 aspect ratio. Acer says this gives students 18 percent more vertical space compared to a 16:9 aspect ratio. The display sports an HD+ resolution of 1366 x 912.

The really alluring aspect of this Chromebook however are the durability features. Given that this notebook is meant to be used at school, chances are it’s going to be dropped, kicked and perhaps used as a makeshift plate in a bind.

The Chromebook 712 has two child safety certifications – ASTM F963-16 and UL/IEC 60950 – and is compliant with the MIL-STD 810G military standard.

All of this means that the Chromebook 712 can withstand 60kg of downward force and will handle drops from a height of up to 122cm.

The keyboard is mechanically anchored and will reportedly withstand up to 330ml of water thanks to a gutter system below it.

Other important features include support for WiFi 6, a 720p webcam and Bluetooth 5.0.

Physical ports include two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type C ports, a USB 3.0 port and a microSD card reader. Storage is handled by 32GB or 64GB of eMMC flash.

The Chromebook 712 is expected to be available in South Africa in April with prices starting at R4 800.
