Good news and bad news for South Africans awaiting undersea cable repair

Last week internet connectivity in South Africa was severely affected when breaks were discovered on the South Atlantic 3/West Africa Submarine Cable (SAT3/WASC) and the West African Cable System (WACS).

As a result South Africans have eagerly been waiting for news on repairs since last week.

This morning we have some good news but also some bad.

First, the good news.

The crew tasked with executing the repair departed Cape Town harbour on Wednesday evening just before 21:00 according to data from Marine Traffic.

The bad news is that it looks like it will take five days – from Thursday – for the Leon Thevenin to arrive at its destination. The vessel is headed to the WACS/SAT3 cable grounds (or would that be waters) off the coast of Angola according to a tweet from the South African National Research and Education Network.

On Tuesday this week, Openserve said that it had activated spare capacity on its Indian Ocean-based undersea cables as a way to minimise the impact on its customers.

For now then SAT3/WASC and WACS cable repairs are a waiting game. We will continue to provide updates as and when they are made available.
