Ninja Theory teases new game Project: Mara

Developer Ninja Theory, best known for 2017’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and 2013’s DmC: Devil May Cry, has released a brief teaser for a new project in the form of Project: Mara.

We get just 42 seconds of… whatever this is in the video embedded below. It’s real world pictures and videos cut with a brief stinger of a CGI character and what looks to be her ghoulish doppelgänger.

That last part happens so quickly in the teaser that we’ve captured it and bumped up the brightness so you can see it better in the header image above.

“Project: MARA will be a real-world and grounded representation of mental terror, based on real lived experience accounts and in-depth research with the aim of recreating the horrors of the mind as accurately and realistically as possible,” reads the teaser description.

We’re not sure if “Mara” being in all caps is a stylistic choice or if it is an acronym.

While this teaser was released today there may be more we can learn about it from another video that Ninja Theory released yesterday.

Titled “The Dreadnought Diaries 1“, this video espouses the benefits of smaller game dev teams working on experiences, which is what Senua’s Sacrifice did to great success.

“Dreadnought” here refers to a development philosophy where these smaller teams work separately while still contributing to the studio as a whole. Hellblade 2 is discussed in relation to Dreadnought.

Aside from some information about the collaborative effort of The Insight Project, Project: Mara is discussed.

Aside from what’s mentioned in the video description we learn that the game will feature but one character in one location and will act as an experimental project and “a showcase of what could become a new immersive storytelling medium”.

All of this is very lofty and ambitious, so we’ll need to see what actually becomes of these new games and design philosophies in the future.
