You can now 3D print Scratchy, the cat mascot of Scratch

Many people have fond memories of the Scratch programme and its mascot Scratchy due to its popularity as a teaching tool and introduction to programming. If you are one of those people and want your own Scratchy figurine, well you can now 3D print one at home.

This is thanks to maker Ardy Lai, who is also a primary school teacher in Taiwan. He explains to us that his students’ love for the orange cat in Scratch coincided with him getting a 3D printer, so he decided to turn the character into a 3D print.

Tinkercad was used for the modelling process here. As both this and Scratch are aimed at beginners and can be used online, it seems fitting here. Lai adds that he also uses Tinkercad to teach his students 3D modelling, and grade five and six learners find it easy to use.

From idea to completion Scratchy took three days to model. Printing took around 32 hours as the design is deceptively large, measuring in at 24.5 X 13 X 12.3 centimetres.

As the max height clearance of the aforementioned new printer is 25 centimetres, this print made full use of the available capacity. For a sense of scale here’s Scratchy on Lai’s shoulder.

Aside from removing supports the raw print didn’t receive much finishing work and was immediately painted with acrylics. As most of the character is one colour, printing in an orange filament meant that some quick touches of white and black paint could finish things off.

If you’d like to make your own version of this project, either for your own fun or as a classroom activity, the files to do so are available for free on Thingiverse.

Strangely enough this is the second animal-based mascot 3D print that we’ve featured. Back in 2018 the duck which is used in all the Kurzgesagt YouTube videos was given a similar treatment.
