First trailer for Netflix’s Ghost in the Shell series looks… different

There is a now long-running meme about Netflix and its anime or live-action adaptations. For the most part these original projects have been hit and miss, and if we’re going off of the latest trailer for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, we have some mixed feelings.

Much of our trepidation comes from the fact that the Japanese series features CGI animation, which we’re not really fans of. It also appears that the producers and animators have gone for a shinier looking version of Major Motoko Kusanagi and her team.

Being fans of the original film, which was far grittier than this new series, it seems like Netflix is playing it safe as far as the animation for SAC_2045 goes.

As for the story, we’re not privy to what the focus will be, but it will likely hinge off of the same arcs as the Stand Along Complex animated series of the early 2000s, which was by all accounts a solid offering in the Ghost in the Shell lore.

With the Scarlett Johansson Ghost in the Shell film not being bad as initially anticipated, perhaps we’re jumping the gun when it comes to the upcoming CGI animated series. That being said, those hoping for a similar animation style to the original film or the first Stand Alone Complex series, are out of luck.

In terms of launching on Netflix, the series is slated for global release in April this year, although a precise date has not been mentioned. It’s also unclear if other regions of the world will get dubbed versions, or simply subtitles for the series.

Hit play on the trailer below and make your own mind up regarding the animation style.
