The latest products to receive the Pokémon branding will be skateboards. While this might conjure up images of cheapo pieces of wood with plastic wraps featuring your favourite pocket monsters, the company has gone in a more premium direction.

It has done this by partnering with Bear Walker. As we’re not too familiar with the world of custom boards we only have his about page to go off of, where he’s described as a maker of “high-quality custom boards”.

Walker and Pokémon are going to be creating a series of five boards featuring Mewtwo, Gengar, Pikachu, Gyarados and Charizard. Despite the fact that Sword and Shield are still relatively fresh and feature dozens of new Pokémon, the pair have once again pulled from the well of nostalgia and are featuring only creatures from generation one.

How surprising.

Our cynicism of nostalgia mining aside, these do look like amazing pieces of art, at least going be the released promotional images you can see below.

Each design is carved into the wood instead of being as simply print or other 2D only implementation.

Each skateboard is 29 inches long and, well, that’s all we know about them right now. The official announcement page for the partnership does not mention the important details of price and availability, instead prompting you to sign up for their marketing emails to be alerted at later date.

In terms of price we can at least speculate going by the prices of similar limited edition products sold by Walker. At the time of writing these are priced between $185 and $500 (~R2 702 and R7 302). We have to imagine that these Pokémon variants will come in at a similar price point.

We have to admit that these look like a tempting buy, even though we don’t actually skate or regularly buy skateboards. Pokémon itself admits that these will look good on display, and we would love one to hang on the wall.
