The state of Vermont could soon be adding emoji to its license plates

It may be January, but we have already found the weirdest news story of 2020 as a bill is currently being put forward in the US state of Vermont to add emoji to car license plates. Given the pervasive nature of emoji when it comes to messaging and plush decorative cushions, adding them to license plates isn’t too much of a stretch these days.

The bill was proposed to the Vermont House of Representatives last week by democrat Rebecca White, and before you start thinking that people would abuse this new ability, or simply have a plate that consisted solely of emoji, there are a few rules.

The first is that drivers would only be able to add one emoji to the current license plates in the state, with options limited to only six different emoji. Before you ask, no the rainbow poop emoji is not there, but drivers would be able to choose from the laughing, smiling, wink, love or sunglasses options.

It should also be noted that if the bill passes, Vermont would be the first state in the US to do so, but would be the first in the world. That honour goes to Queensland in Australia, which added this ability last year with five different emoji choices.

That ability is quite pricey though, with Engadget reporting that it costs $336 to do so. At this stage Vermont has not given any advised pricing for such a plan, but if they go the Queensland route, it could be a nice money maker for the state.

Whether that happens remains to be seen, so we’ll have to wait for the coming weeks to find out if the Vermont House of Representatives has a sense of humour.
