Google pondering call recording for its Android phone app

There has been a number of rumours surrounding Google and tools it is developing for Android today. It makes sense given the company confirmed the dates of its annual I/O developer conference last week. Among the rumoured tools is call recording for the Android phone app.

The feature was discovered by 9to5Google and XDA Developers, with both sites finding an APK in the latest build of Google’s Phone 44. Said APK also shows how the call recording tool could be legally implemented.  The same feature would also allow users to translate calls in real-time.

As for how the legalities would be tackled, the APK shows that a disclaimer message would be sent and displayed to the person being called. The disclaimer would say something to the effect of, “When using the call recording feature, you are responsible for complying with applicable laws related to the recording of calls. Please be aware that many jurisdictions require the consent of both parties for such recording.”

Thereafter a voice note will inform both parties when recording has started and ended.

The jurisdictions being mentioned pertain to laws in certain states in the US, according to Engadget. In South Africa similar regulations apply, as they likely do in most parts of the world.

It also would not be the first time that Google has dabbled in live transcribing, adding the feature natively to the Pixel 4 smartphone.

Whether regulators would be willing to allow a call recording feature is unclear at this stage, but speaking from a journalist’s perspective, being able to record calls for interviews and then having them transcribed automatically would be fantastic.

For now we do not know when or indeed if Google plans to officially announce this feature, but with the I/O conference happening in May, it would serve as the best platform for a reveal.
