Cape Town-based online retailer Raru has a new section available in the form of limited edition film cell displays.
These products are imports from the US and cost a pretty penny with the cheapest being R607, and going up to R4 515.
These come from the US company FilmCells which describe these products as: “collectible framed displays that include images and real 35mm film from your favorite movies. These products also include a certificate of authenticity, and a limited edition number where applicable. There are many sizes and styles to choose from, but each is crafted with gallery-quality framing materials and can be customized with an optional backlit LED acrylic frame.”
In essence you’re buying a fancy shadowbox which apparently has some segment of your favourite film trapped inside.
In its announcement for these products Raru stresses another point, that the strips of film you see in the advertising may not be what you receive.
“Please note: The actual strips of film vary from piece to piece, as they are hand picked from reels of film. We cannot accept requests for specific strips, nor can we accept returns on opened items. The cell strips you receive may be different from those pictured,” the announcement reads.
Despite this they still look like really interesting buys, especially for movie buffs who may already have a collection of similar items. If you know someone like that this could be an easy to get gift.
At this point, however, we have to provide a prerequisite warning about Raru. In recent months we’ve heard a lot of negative experiences coming from its services. We’ve experienced this ourselves when we ordered a graphics card and the company cancelled our order without informing us, months after we paid for it in full.
Imports from the company, which this falls into, are also susceptible to long delivery times and other problems inherent in long distance deliveries.
Despite these problems we still like to highlight Raru’s efforts as they’re one of the few big online retailers who offer such niche products like this.
Keep all of that in mind if you’re thinking of buying. The full range of these products, which release on 28th February 2020, are available here.
