Brace for a weekend of loadshedding from 09:00 today to 06:00 on Monday

Following its return on Thursday evening, loadshedding will become a feature of the weekend according to a power alert from Eskom.

The utility has said that Stage 2 loadshedding will go into effect from 09:00 on Friday morning and run until 06:00 on Monday morning.

“This is due to a shortage of generation capacity and depleted emergency resources which were used extensively to supplement capacity over the last few days. In addition we are taking out three big units for planned maintenance today,” wrote Eskom.

Unplanned outages have been slightly decreased to 12 722MW as of 05:30 on Friday morning, according to Eskom.

Worryingly, Eskom has said that the status of the power system “may change at short notice”. Whether that means we’ll see loadshedding increase in severity over the course of the weekend is unclear but that statement does not bode well.

“We apologise to South Africans for the negative impact this may have on them. We want to assure the nation that critical maintenance is being done to units on planned outages as well as some of those on unplanned outages to ensure their timeous return to service,” added Eskom.

With the weekend set to be a rather dark affair we recommend charging your electronics in the moments you have power.

We also highly recommend checking your schedules online or via the EskomSePush app to plan your weekend around power cuts.
