Microsoft’s latest bug bounty program for Xbox Live will offer up to $20 000

Microsoft is looking to find any issues with Xbox Live, with the firm announcing a new bug bounty program for its online gaming platform.

As with most bug bounty programs, it will pay “hunters” if they find vulnerabilities in the software running the platform, with more money being paid depending on the severity of what is discovered.

To that end Microsoft is offering up to $20 000 for the program, but things actually start at a far more reduced $500 for any discoveries.

“The Xbox bounty program invites gamers, security researchers, and technologists around the world to help identify security vulnerabilities in the Xbox network and services, and share them with the Microsoft Xbox team through Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure (CVD),” an announcement for the program explains.

Looking at the pricing for different types of bugs found (pictured below), remote code execution exploits will earn the highest amount, ranging from $10 000 to $20 000. There are also a few things that are out of scope and carry no reward, such as DDoS issues or URL redirects.

Precisely why Microsoft is issuing the bug bounty program now is unclear, but perhaps the firm is working on something new for Xbox Live and wants to ensure the platform is as secure as possible.

For now no closing date has been issued for the program.
