South African Super Smash Bros. tournament offers ticket to DreamHack

Local competitive players of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have an avenue to ply their skills in the coming months thanks to a tournament that will see the winner receiving an all expenses paid trip to DreamHack in Sweden.

This tournament, called Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (SSBU) Summer Cup, will take place in three batches: qualifying matches in Johannesburg, qualifying in Cape Town, and then a National Final also in Johannesburg.

The winner of the Cape Town qualifier will receive a ticket to Johannesburg to play in the the National Final, together with a food allowance and accommodation.

The winner of the National Final gets a ticket to Sweden, a spectating ticket to DreamHack, transport and food allowances, and accommodation. The list of winnings also simply states “visa” though we’re not entirely sure what this entails. We assume the winner will receive assistance in acquiring their visa so they can actually travel to Sweden.

The important dates and places are below:

Johannesburg qualifiers at Nintendo Pop Up Zone in Sandton City:

  • 1st February 2020
  • 29th February 2020
  • 28th March 2020

Cape Town qualifier at ATK Arena:

  • 23rd February 2020

National Final in Johannesburg:

  • 4th April 2020

Those who place first or second at the qualifiers will receive a spot to play in the National Final.

As for the exact rules of the tournament in-game, what stages will be played on, legal controllers and more can be found on the dedicated Toornament.com page for the event. It’s worth noting that Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers will be provided, and Game Cube Controllers are allowed if the competitor brings their own adapter.

From reading through the fine print we picked up on some interesting details. Firstly those under 18 are allowed to compete, and if they win an additional ticket to Sweden will be provided for their guardian. That sounds like a nice little vacation if you ask us.

Anyone considering playing, and possibly winning, must be able to travel between 12th June and 16th June for DreamHack.
