Fujifilm’s new retro-styled X100V is a compact camera built for travel and street photography

Over the past few years we’ve enjoyed the mirrorless camera offerings from Fujifilm, not least of all because of their styling, which has a retro feel to it. Embracing that approach the Japanese camera maker has unveiled a new retro-styled compact digital device in the form of the X100V.

It is the fifth iteration in the company’s iconic X100 range, and is a follow up to 2017’s impressive X100F.

So what has Fujifilm added to this model in order to tempt photographers to upgrade? The big talking point here is the new 23mm F2 fixed focal lens onboard. Added to this is a new tilting LCD monitor on the rear for when you’re wanting to take shots from lower angles and an Advanced Hybrid Viewfinder.

Powering things internally is the latest generation X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor and X-Processor 4, which Fujifilm says yields superb image quality for both stills and video. It’s the same combination that Fujifilm favoured in the X-T3 mirrorless camera, which means a 26.1MP sensor is present.

Shifting back to the retro-styling, Fujifilm has opted for a satin coating for the aluminium portions of the body, as well as slight enhancements have also been made to the camera’s grip, ISO dial, and lens barrel to make it more comfortable to hold and operate.

As such it should be a highly coveted camera for its looks alone when it becomes available to purchase locally. Speaking of which Fujifilm South Africa has not offered an official release date, but say the X100V is expected to land in SA in March of this year.

In terms of price, the camera is recommended to retail for R19 500, which means it’s the type of camera for those wanting to take their travel or street photography seriously.
