Changes to swords in Destiny 2 mean no more Worldline Skating

Anybody that has watched a Destiny 2 raid speed run will know about Worldline Skating.

Worldline Skating is an advanced technique that exploits a feature in the Exotic, Worldline Zero, allowing players to traverse long distances very quickly.

In the most recent This Week at Bungie update, the developer announced sweeping changes to swords in Destiny 2 for the forthcoming – as yet unnamed – season.

“After some brainstorming and development time, Swords are receiving a sort of tableflip when it comes to light attacks, heavy attacks, and guarding. While you’ll still rip and tear through opponents, as you would expect from a Sword, most of what you know needs to be unlearned. The blades have been rebalanced, and a new energy meter is making its way to swords,” wrote Bungie.

The exact (and exhaustive) changes can be found over on the Bungie website.

What was unclear was whether Worldline Zero would be affected by this change and we now have confirmation from Bungie that it will.

As I understand it, the speedrun community will need to find new ways to break the sound barrier next season,” tweeted Bungie community manager dmg.

I understand this will come as a disappointment to some. Hopefully, this will bring new techniques and serve as a challenge to refresh previously established records,” he added.

This response has not sat well with the community, especially those who speedrun raids and other content such as the dungeons.

What is worth remembering is that Bungie is changing the way swords work as a whole including how heavy and light attacks work. That means that Worldline Zero itself is not being target but is rather a victim of sweeping changes to the weapon archetype.

“In general, Swords have also had some of the damage amounts for different attacks changed, and the various Sword perks have been adjusted. So you’ll want to experiment a bit after the changes hit. We do hope you’ll enjoy the changes,” explained Bungie’s development team.

This means that Black Talon which can “shoot” at an enemy will change as well.

We’ re keen to see more of these changes in the flesh and with just a few weeks left of Season of Dawn, we won’t have to wait long.

You can check out the power of Worldline Skating in a speedrun of the Leviathan raid on 1st January that took just 13:49. This raid usually takes an hour or two with a competent team or more with newbies. Strong language is used in the video.
