Outer Worlds Switch port delayed but physical version is coming

Outer Worlds, which launched on PC, PlaySation 4 and Xbox One in October of 2019, will not be launching on Nintendo Switch as planned.

The game was originally slated to arrive on the portable console come 6th March, but that has been pushed back indefinitely because of something that has been in the news a lot recently: the Novel Coronavirus.

Outer Worlds developer Private Division has recently shared this announcement with the world:

“We’re delaying Outer Worlds on Nintendo Switch due to the coronavirus impacting the Virtuos team working on the port, to provide them enough time to finish development. We’ll now be releasing the physical version on cartridge. Once we have a new launch date, we’ll let you know! To clarify, the team at Virtuos is ok, but their office has remained closed during this time. We’re working with the team to determine an updated development timeline, and will share more regarding a new launch date shortly.”

Virtuos has studios around the world and was founded in Shanghai in 2004. The company has assisted on ports of many titles such as L.A. Noire, Mortal Kombat X and Dark Souls Remastered.

The silver lining in this delay is the announcement of that physical version of the game. While everyone is going digital there’s still a strong love for physical media for both collectors and those who enjoy the outright ownership of a cartridge or disc.

Right now no further details have been provided about this physical version outside of the brief mention in the announcement above.

We can, however, speculate on the box art. When the Nintendo Switch port was still on track for the March release Private Division shared a mockup of a a faux cover art intended for a digital title. We assume the physical release could also use this art, albeit with the notice about the download being removed as a cart has been confirmed now.
