“Normal services will resume once loadshedding runs its course” – Vodacom

Over the weekend service provider Vodacom sent an SMS out to its customers addressing losses of connectivity when rotational loadshedding was active.

If you are a customer of the network you may have found that, once the power goes out, so does your mobile internet and even you ability to make or receive calls.

“Vodacom is aware that many customers around the country are experiencing issues connecting to the network because of loadshedding. We have put proactive measures in place to help mitigate the effects of widespread loadshedding. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience, normal services will resume once loadshedding runs its course,” the SMS reads.

There are two very frustrating things about this message from Vodacom. The first is that it’s an almost copy paste job from a similar message sent out during the Stage 4 loadshedding which happened in December 2019 just a few months ago.

You can read our story about that message here, but the only difference between the two is the mention of Stage 4 and the batteries and generators used to keep cell towers live when loadshedding starts.

The SMS also directs to a page entitled “How is Vodacom affected by load shedding?” which is dated 8th December 2019.

The second pain point here is that Eskom has stated that loadshedding will be a reality of South African life until at least July 2021. Vodacom’s message that “normal services will resume once loadshedding runs its course” doesn’t hold much water now that power outages are far more common and will be for some time.

As always all there really is to do for us consumers is to try get by. Remember to check your local schedules for when loadshedding will impact you, charge up everything with a battery, and maybe download a few shows and movies to stay entertained in the dark.
