Two new entry-level smartphones land locally with the Nokia C1 and Nokia 2.3

Over the past few years Nokia Mobile, now manufactured under license by HMD Global, has carved out a solid name for itself when it comes to devices in the mid-range and entry-level markets. Now the firm has two new offerings that will come as welcome offerings for cost savvy consumers – the Nokia C1 and Nokia 2.3 (pictured above).

So what’s on offer here? Starting with the cheaper of the two, the Nokia C1, which retails for a recommended R999, is designed for consumers wanting to make the jump from feature phone to smartphone, but cannot afford a substantial outlay to do so.

In terms of specifications, HMD Global has kept things utilitarian, with a 5.45″ display up front. Sticking with the front a modest 5MP camera takes care of selfies, with the rear packing a similarly sized 5MP option with better aperture and autofocus.

Other elements include 1GB of RAM, as well as a quad-core 1.3GHz processor and 16GB worth of storage. There’s also a 2 500mAh battery and it supports up to 3G connectivity, so it is very much on the entry-level end of the smartphone spectrum.

Moving on to the more expensive Nokia 2.3, which retails for more than double at R1 999 (RRP), it is naturally sporting better specifications across the board. There’s a 6.2″ HD+ display up front for example, which features the teardrop screen notch to house a 5MP selfie camera. On the rear things are upped slightly with a 13MP shooter and 2MP depth sensing lens present.

Added to this is a more generous 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and MediaTek Helio A22 processor doing the heavy lifting. There’s a large 4 000mAh battery thrown in for good measure, along with support for up to LTE (Cat 4) connectivity.

As mentioned earlier, both models are now available to purchase in South Africa, with the Nokia C1 in either Black or Red from retailers in the MTN network. The Nokia 2.3 is available across the country in either the Cyan Blue or Charcoal colour options.
