Dakka Squadron is the latest Warhammer 40K game

It’s been about five minutes since a new game based on a Games Workshop property has been announced, so here’s the latest: Dakka Squadron, a flying combat game based on the green boys themselves, the Orks.

“With 3rd person, action-packed gameplay and intuitive controls, players will choose a Waaagh! (or campaign) and take part in a series of missions across alien worlds. Players will fly against insane odds, blasting away with their Supa-Shootas against enemy air forces and ground targets, while unlocking new weapons and upgrading their Dakkajets to be the most ‘dead killy’ Flyboys in the sky,” an announcement for the game reads.

If you’re not invested in the 40K universe and those words mean nothing to you, just know that Games Workshop’s version of Orks use lots of made up words, live to fight, and use machinery that is held together with enthusiasm and shouting.

The game is being developer by Phosphor Games Studio which has done a lot of work in the mobile world but hasn’t yet created anything that has grabbed many headlines.

Still, we’re always excited to see more of the 40K franchise and playing as flying Orks is a unique angle on things.

Other features of Dakka Squadron announced include more than twenty campaign missions, voice acting, lots of aerial playstyles and environments spanning multiple planets.

This title will be available on both PC and console, but which exact consoles have not been stated. The release date is listed as Q4 2020, so we won’t be playing Dakka Squadron for the next few months.

In terms of gameplay all we have to go off right now is a short reveal trailer that is embedded below. You really don’t see much and, to be honest, it’s not a great first impression. The visuals here look very dated and you don’t get much of a sense of what the game will play like.

Hopefully these are early days and the game will polish up ahead of the end of the year.
