When the newest games Sword and Shield launched at the end of 2019 they contained many new Pokémon to catch, one of them being Galarian Corsola. This regional variant of the gen two Pokémon is meant to represent the vast coral reef destruction due in part to climate change.

As such Galarian Corsola is now part Ghost type to represent the dead coral, and its design is rather morose ditching its happy, pink look for a dour white one. This sad state is even reflected in the official art for the Pokémon when it was represented in the card game, with a Galarian Corsola lyring motionless in what looks to be a dried sea bed.

Now its the turn of fans to do something similar. Spurred on by the recent bushfires in Australia, the artists collective Élite 4 (who you may know for the Xenoverse project) has created the hashtag #PokéArtForEnvironment challenging others to reimagine Pokémon if they were to be affected by climate change like Galarian Corsola.

“…we asked people to imagine a Pokémon World affected by climate change and how Pokémon would look in this world and of course to make a donation to relief funds for Australia or planet-saving enterprises. Every submitted design represent sad, deformed and suffering versions of existing Pokémon, which is unsettling, since we are used to the happy and cute creatures. Everyone can join the movement and give a little help to save the planet!” a representative for the Élite 4 tells us.

To kick things off the collective produced two examples in the form of changed versions of Cramorant and Komala. The latter is an especially poignant choice here as it is based on a koala, an animal that is closely associated with Australia and has suffered immensely in the bushfires.

We’ve collected a few of the best works from the hashtag and embedded them down below, but we implore you to explore it yourself. While we first came across the hashtag on Instagram, it is being picked up on Twitter too.
