Hot Wheels made two RC Cybertrucks for those who cannot buy the real thing

With Tesla electric vehicles yet to be made available in South Africa, those interested in owning one will need to settle for some alternatives. To that end we give you two new remote-controlled Cybertrucks from Hot Wheels.

Those who follow the exploits of Elon Musk and his electric carmaking company are likely very familiar with the Cybertruck, which broke cover late last year. Pre-orders for the EV are already well under way, but it still remains to be seen how much it will cost, and how quickly Tesla will be able to get them onto the road.

Either way it’s out of reach for a lot of people, which is why these new Hot Wheels creations might help tide things over.

Hot Wheels has two versions of the Cybertruck available for pre-order, although at the time of writing the larger model (above) has already sold out.

It is a 1:10 scale offering that costs an eye-watering $400 (~R6 057), features all-wheel drive and a Chill or Sport mode. Sadly Mattel, which owns Hot Wheels is only making this RC available for those in the United States or Canada, with no word just yet on whether a wider global release is planned.

The same exclusive status applies to the smaller version of the two, a 1:64 scale model which costs a far more palatable $20 (~R302).

The pre-order page for this RC Cybertruck still shows it as available at the time of writing, but our thoughts are that it will change quite soon. In terms of features, this model is less packed, but does operate on many of the Hot Wheels racing tracks.

Are these new RC Cybertrucks practical? No. Do they seem like a lot of fun? Definitely.

Here’s hoping Prima or another local retailer can bring them to South Africa, as the real thing shows no sings of hitting our roads anytime soon.
