Vodacom Foundation revamps Early Childhood Development Centres in Atteridgeville

The Vodacom Foundation has announced that it has completed the revamping of two Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in Atteridgeville, Pretoria.

The two centres are located close to WF Nkomo High School, a Vodacom-supported School of Excellence. This location, according to Vodacom is meant to insure that learners don’t fall out of the system and continue to receive quality education throughout their lives.

“As a long-standing partner of government, we have taken a deliberate decision to invest in early childhood development. This is because research in this field show that key to providing quality basic education requires a range of early childhood development services interventions and programmes that support the holistic development of young children,” chief officer of corporate affairs at Vodacom, Takalani Netshitenzhe, said in a statement.

Vodacom upgraded infrastructure at the centres as well as painted the centre, fixed ablution facilities, improved security and installed an ICT trolley solution.

The trolley sports 30 tablets which are loaded with numeracy and literacy software. A mobile library has also been provided to each of the ECD centres.

“This investment is a direct response to government’s Vision 2030 approach to education and President Ramaphosa’s call to make ECDs compulsory for all children before they enter Grade 1, as this is essential in equipping children to succeed in education. At Vodacom we believe that a renewed focus on ECDs will strengthen our basic education system and ensuring that children are able to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully in the growth of our economy,” said Netshitenzhe.

Vodacom says that the renovations to the centres will make for a safe learning environment and meet the requirements of the Department of Social Development. The firm also said that the centres will give staff access to free training courses should they wish to improve their skills in the realm of early childhood development.

To date, Vodacom Foundation has renovated eight ECD centres with a view to complete 15 in total. The foundation says that 11 ECD centres will be upgraded by March 2020.
