Facebook has cancelled its developer conference for 2020

The spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has lead to yet another major event being cancelled. This time it’s Facebook’s developer conference, F8.

While Facebook will still host a live stream, the in-person portion of the event has been cancelled.

The event was due to take place on 5th and 6th May in San Jose, California but following careful deliberation, Facebook has decided to prioritise the health and safety of organisers, attendees and Facebook staffers.

This was a tough call to make – F8 is an incredibly important event for Facebook and it’s one of our favorite ways to celebrate all of you from around the world – but we need to prioritize the health and safety of our developer partners, employees and everyone who helps put F8 on,” wrote director of Platform Partnerships at Facebook app, Konstantinos Papamiltiadis.

As mentioned above, Facebook will host local events in various countries, host live streams and release videos in place of hosting an F8 conference this year.

Details regarding those events and livestreams will be released in the coming weeks.

F8 is not the first major tech event to be cancelled because of the novel coronavirus. Mobile World Congress 2020 was meant to take place in Barcelona this week but it was cancelled following several high-profile brands pulling out of the show.

It also looks as if the Game Developers Conference may be affected by the spread of the coronavirus but for now that conference is still on.

As of 27th February there are 82 294 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus according to data from the World Health Organisation.
