At the beginning of February Pokémon teamed up with Google to host a worldwide vote on what the Pokémon of the Year should be. That process came to a close recently with the overall winner being Greninja.

If you’ve followed Pokémon in recent years this shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. Greninja won a similar contest back in 2016 and it’s been a solid fan favourite ever since it came out in the X and Y games.

Either banking on this fan good will or pushing their own love of the design, The Pokémon Company has also done its best to promote Greninja. It was seen extensively in the anime being used by protagonist Ash where it received a new form called Ash-Greninja, and it was seen throughout the Detective Pikachu movie.

Things are a bit more interesting looking down the list as the franchise mascot Pikachu is at 19th place. Eevee, which was pushed as a secondary mascot for the release of the Let’s Go games, finishes right below it at 20th.

There’s also a decent smattering of recently introduced Pokémon from the newest Sword and Shield games. Out of the revealed results three of the top 30 are generation eight designs.

While that may not sound like a lot, it’s worth remembering that voters on Google could choose from all generations for the vote, so the new ones bringing in 10% of the top finishes is a decent performance. We are surprised that the beloved Wooloo did not place, however.

The top 30 overall winners of the contest, and the amount of votes each received, can be found in the list below. The official site for the contest also has breakdowns per region. Oh, and by region we mean the fictional regions in the Pokémon world. We would have loved to see the vote breakdown per country or real world geographical regional, but that has not been provided by Google.
