The coronavirus has thrown a spanner in the works for several companies who had big announcements planned for the since cancelled Mobile World Congress. It was a necessary step to take given concerns about the epidemic, but it would have been nice to see the new concept phone that Vivo was preparing to debut – the APEX 2020.
Instead of a press conference, Vivo took to YouTube to debut the device in a rendered video (pasted below), so it still remains to be seen what the real thing would have looked like. It’s also unclear whether the Chinese firm actually plans to release a fully fledged commercial version later this year, like at IFA 2020 in Berlin for example.
For now we only have the info-laden video to look at, and going off of what’s detailed, the APEX 2020 could be one of the best-specced devices on paper.
To that end it features a curved 6.45″ display, with what the company calls a fullview edgeless design. As such it takes a cue from the Galaxy S Edge devices from a few years ago.
Added to this is a proper all-screen up front, with the 16MP selfie camera housed under the screen along with the fingerprint sensor. The former is something that Vivo and Oppo have shown off in the past, and the APEX 2020 could be the first real world debut of it.
Some other interesting elements include “continuous optical zoom”, with Vivo employing a telephoto lens with moving elements to deliver either 5 times or 7.5 times zoom. The optical zoom available on other smartphones usually utilise a fixed lens, and software to produce the zooming effect.
The same camera setup also features a gimbal-like system for the 48Mp primary lens, which Vivo says affords the APEX 2020 a 200 percent improvement on optical image stabilisation over other smartphones.
There’s also 60W wireless charging, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, 12GB RAM, 256GB onboard storage and 5G support thrown in for good measure.
All of these elements would make the APEX 2020 a covetable flagship phone, but unless it moves out of concept phase, we can only get so excited.
