AMD beat out Nvidia with discrete GPU shipments in Q4 2019

PC builders appear to be opting for graphics cards from AMD rather than Nvidia according to a report from Jon Peddie Research (JPR).

Looking at GPU shipments for Q4 2019, JPR found that overall GPU shipments increased by 3.4 percent from Q3 2019 with AMD increasing shipments by 22.6 percent. Nvidia actually saw shipments fall 1.9 percent between Q3 2019 and Q4 2019.

In terms of overall shipments, Intel is still the dominant force thanks in part to its GPUs being caked into processors.

Looking specifically at discrete GPUs however, Nvidia is still king of the hill with a staggering 73 percent share of the market.

“This is the third consecutive quarter of increased GPU shipments, However, Q1 [2020] which is seasonally flat to down may show an unusual dip because of supply chain interruptions from China due to the Coronavirus epidemic,” president of JPR, Jon Peddie wrote.

Despite this, Peddie anticipates that 2020 will be a good year for discrete GPUs what with Intel possibly re-entering the segment. Vendors are also anticipating a 7 percent increase in shipments for the current quarter.

We suspect the release of AMD’s Radeon RX 5600-series and Radeon Pro W5500 GPUs will be a reason for that increase but we’ll have to wait for data to see whether that is indeed the case.

The president also mentioned a possible fourth entry into the discrete GPU market by an IP company. It’s a curious mention and no details are provided regarding who this company is but it has certainly piqued our interest.

Whether AMD can continue this momentum throughout the year remains to be seen but the firm is certainly on the up after playing second fiddle to Nvidia for years.
