Hide your indoor camera in a 3D printed raptor skull

In recent years indoor cameras and other smart surveillance products have really exploded in popularity. Even for the security conscience having a random camera hanging out in the living room isn’t the best look, so how would you make one blend in? Well simply 3D print a raptor skull to enclose it, of course.

Thingiverse user 3Dprintingandbeer is behind this project, stating that they got a cheap camera off of Amazon to keep on eye on their dog, and decided to turn it into a display piece by way of raptor as a homage to Jurassic Park.

Because of this the project features a stand with the famous line “Clever Girl” from the first movie. To make both it and the skull itself, Fusion 360 was used to remix two existing models from Thingiverse.

The T-Rex stand and full size velociraptor skull were the two donors here. Thankfully the modifications to both were minimal only requiring about an hour or two of work.

Printing, as expected, took much longer. In total around 40 hours were required here. After a failed print of the teeth (solved by adding in a brim) the pieces could be glued together.

Once assembled this print is apparently 1:1 scale, with the skull being 9.5 inches long and 3 inches wide (24.13 X 7.62 centimetres).

Those who hate finishing work and painting will be happy to see that none is required here, at least for the final version of the project you can see in the gallery below. While the skull does look fine without the camera inserted in the first two pictures, it really adds a sense of menace when it is in there.

To make your own the files are available for free over on Thingiverse. As this was designed for one specific camera, anyone looking to make their own will need to modify the design to fit the specific device they’re using.
