Game Developers Conference due to take place in March, postponed

The organisers behind the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) have announced that the gathering will be postponed.

Unlike Mobile World Congress, which was cancelled, the organisers of GDC are seemingly adamant that the conference will be held, albeit later than usual.

“After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March,” reads a statement from GDC.

“As everyone has been reminding us, great things happen when the community comes together and connects at GDC. For this reason, we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer,” the organisation added.

Unlike GSMA which named novel-coronavirus and COVID-19 directly as the reasons for cancelling the trade show, GDC has made no mention of the virus nor that its spread is the reason behind the show’s postponement.

The decision to postpone GDC 2020 follows a number of high profile cancellations.

Sony and Facebook both backed out early in February. Those two firms were followed by EA and Kojima Productions before Unity, Microsoft, Epic Games, Amazon and Activision/Blizzard all pulled out last week according to Ars Technica.

GDC has said that it will be working with its partners to finalise details about the now postponed conference and details will be shared in the coming weeks.

For now, those who had plans on attending the conference should check their email for steps regarding refunds. GDC has said that conference and expo attendees would be refunded in full.
