Local subscription pricing for PlayStation Plus changing on 1st May

Over the weekend PlayStation Plus members received an email notifying them of changes in pricing to the service. The new prices are good for those who opt for longer subscription periods, and slightly less so for those who choose the monthly option.

To that end PlayStation has detailed that these pricing changes will take effect from 11:59am local time on 1st May 2020, citing fluctuating market conditions as the cause.

The company explains that any recurring payments due on or after that date will be at the new prices.

Speaking of which, the price changes are listed as:

  • 12-month plan has decreased to R749.
  • 3-month plan has decreased to R319.
  • One-month plan has increased to R119.

“We will alter the price of a PlayStation Plus subscription at 10:59 am BST on 1st May 2020. As you are an existing member, all recurring subscription fees payable by you on or after 1st May 2020 will be charged at the new price,” said PlayStation in the aforementioned email.

“Up until 30th April 2020, you may purchase a PlayStation Plus subscription at the current price, which will then be added (or “stacked on”) to your current membership period,” it adds.

The increase to the one-month plan is R10 as it currently costs PlayStation Plus users R109 per month on this option. The increase is small, but whether it prompts users to shift to one of the other plans, remains to be seen.

The company has also advised that those wanting to cancel the service, need to to turn off the auto-renewal option in their profile’s settings, as well as do so 24 hours before the renewal is scheduled to happen.

That said we do not foresee many PlayStation Plus members cancelling, with the jump to a longer plan more likely.
