Riot Games shares alpha footage of Valorant

Back in October of last year Riot Games showed off a bit of the FPS game in development called “Project A”. We now know that Project A is titled Valorant, and we have a short gameplay preview to judge what it’s like.

As with the initial reveal it’s difficulty to shake the Counter-Strike comparisons here. The two look visually similar and the vast amount of drab brown walls in this preview reminds us of several popular maps from the other game.

Regardless things do look a bit interesting here with exotic weapons like glowing bows and character abilities.

“VALORANT is Riot Games’ upcoming 5v5 character-based tactical shooter. This alpha gameplay footage was captured from an internal developer playtest – pardon the video quality, we hope you appreciate the gameplay. If you like what you see (or hear), come play in Summer 2020,” the video description reads.

As Riot Games is a US company we assume that’s Summer in America, which is between late June and late September.

If you want to keep up with the game, several social media accounts and a website now exists for it.

The YouTube channel hosting the preview is embedded below, and the website can be found here. It prompts you to leave your email address if you’d like Valorant news in your inbox.

The site offers up some promising finer details such as 128-tick servers, datacentres around the world and solid performance even on low end, older PCs. That last spec may be why the game has an artstyle that many have found rather drab.

By not cranking up the effects and making complex character models, Riot Games is claiming that the game will run at a minimum of 30 FPS on “most min-spec computers (even dating back a decade)”. Those on more recent hardware can expect between 60 and 144 FPS.

With the competitive FPS so crowded and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive being such a dominant force in the genre it will be interesting to see if a giant like Riot Games can make an impact with Valorant. As we get deeper into 2020 and closer to the release of the game, we’ll see how it pans out.
