Vodacom Business touting the speed, security and IoT support of WiFi 6 for local enterprises

Much like 5G, WiFi 6 is set to become the new wireless connectivity standard, with local enterprises expected to benefit the greatest from its local rollout. This according to Vodacom Business, which views WiFi 6 as an enabler of digital journeys for many South African companies.

It’s also something that the firm plans to leverage in the coming months to become an industry leader regarding the rollout and support of WiFi 6.

“The explosive growth of devices and applications over the past 20 years has resulted in an insatiable demand for faster and better Wi-Fi,” the firm notes.

“With the introduction of the Wi-Fi 6, Vodacom Business will offer faster network performance, connecting more devices simultaneously and transforming Wi-Fi from a ‘best-effort’ endeavour to a wireless technology that will become the new standard for internet connectivity and quality,” it adds.

A significant upgrade

Looking at the advantages that WiFi 6 will hold for local organisations, Vodacom Business highlights the effectiveness that this standard delivers in terms of how the wireless spectrum is utilised. This is illustrated perfectly by the 62.5bps/Hz (up to) that WiFi 6 can offer.

The far lower latency is another important benefit of WiFi 6, which is crucial in an environment that is dense in devices wanting connectivity. Added to this is the fact that it will prove helpful for low-power consuming IoT environments, many of which are reliant on batteries.

“This latest technology will make it possible for a more seamless integration of systems that support the next generation business requirements of a mobile workforce, improving on efficiencies, and providing a transparent & hyper-speed network, with software analytics overlays, whilst optimising power use and cost savings,” says Fatima Hassim, managing executive for Vodacom Business.

“It still works on the same frequency channels as Wi-Fi 5, but Wi-Fi 6 offers a more secure, robust network performance,” she adds.

Looking at the future, the executive points to enterprise-grade WiFi as one of the next-generation technologies that will separate many of the successful enterprises from those lagging behind digitally.

“Enterprise Wi-Fi can be considered one of the next generation technologies that enable businesses to better understand their network trends, as well as the usage of end users whether it be an employee or a customer,” explains Vodacom Business.

Looking forward

The firm also notes that this new standard will deliver techniques such as Orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) and multi-user multiple-in multiple-out (MU-MIMO). These importantly increase reliability, efficiency and improve the average performance by creating a narrower, albeit dedicated sub-channel, according to Vodacom Business.

Moreover, OFDMA boosts spectral efficiency and reduces latency, while supporting other uses such as email or light web browsing, they say.

“This technology can be applied to various industries and sectors such as educational facilities, manufacturing, hospitality, retail spaces and other public enterprises that have thousands, if not tens of thousands of users’ active users in an area,” the firm concludes.

We’re already aware of the value that consumers will get from WiFi 6 in their homes, and now it looks like enterprises are beginning to turn to the technology to improve their own environments in 2020.
