3D Print your own Assault Phaser from Star Trek VI

Phasers are extremely popular 3D prints that you can find all over places like Thingiverse and MyMiniFactory. What’s rarer is more niche variants of the fictional weapon, which is exactly what we have here today in this 1:1 scale recreation of the Assault Phaser from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

This project comes to us from Spanish maker Rubén Algarra who tells us that, like most of the 3D prints we feature, the impetus to make it came after looking for a suitable model to print and not finding anything out there.

“I collected images to use as a guide for the Phaser…. especially from the replicas of the original movie. I modelled it in Maya… trying to reproduce even the smallest detail that I could appreciate in the different pictures,” Algarra tells us.

This required a lot of trial and error to complete. Along with wanting to accurately replicate the Phaser, thought was put into how it could be separated to make printing and finishing easier.

While an exact tally on the amount of hours that went into the model is not available Algarra estimates that about 18 hours were required.

Another approximation was needed for the time taken to print, which came in at about 30 hours.

All the pieces here were sanded and primed until a suitable finish was achieved. Painting here was done with a simple spray can but an airbrush may be used in future projects.

Once assembled the Phaser is 24 centimetres long, 18 centimetres tall and 3 centimetres wide. For those looking to make their own to carry around for cosplay (as this one was) it weighs in at just 172 grams.

The files to make your own are available on Thingiverse for free and the finished product can be seen in the gallery below, but that’s not the end of the story.

To complete his cosplay Algarra also created a holster to pair with this. You can see this shown off in a short video. This holster, along with a Communicator, will also be uploaded to Thingiverse in the future.
