Adidas made a football boot insole that earns you FIFA Mobile in-game rewards

Adidas is a brand that is all too familiar with collaborations, but this latest one is distinctively tech-based and a little weird.

It involves the GMR football boot insoles that the company teased a couple of weeks ago, which were developed with some help from Google’s Jacquard Wearable division, and have now been put to use in FIFA Mobile.

That’s right, stick with us, as Adidas says the insole can track its wearers movements to assist in earning in-game rewards for FIFA Mobile.

It’s not the first application we envisioned for the wearable solution, but at the very least is an interesting way to utilise the technology.

The GMR device, which fits beneath the insole is powered by machine learning algorithms designed by the aforementioned team at Jacquard. Capturing the wearer’s data, it is linked to their FIFA Mobile account and the completion of specific tasks will earn you prizes and achievements.

The “Master Finisher” achievement for example requires users to complete 40 powerful shots in the penalty area within the space of a week. Precisely how the GMR or app know you’re taking said shots in an 18 yard (16.5m) penalty area is unclear.

It also remains to be seen whether people will go through so much effort for FIFA Mobile, especially as they cost an estimated $35 (~R725) per insole.

If we’re talking about semi-professional and professional players using the GMR for capturing match data, then we can see a greater application of this technology.

For now though it’s got a rather niche application.
